Street Art in East London

Something a little different today! After exploring street art around Shoreditch and Brick Lane, I bring you highlights in the form of curated videos.

East London – Street Art Canvas

A lot of big cities have a neighbourhood like the one we will see today. It’s cool, full of hipsters and street food and art and vibes. Often because the people who bring this edge also need low rent, it’s in a traditionally working class or overlooked part of the city (although after the artists come the gentrification battles). In London, these creative energies are centred just where the City of London meets the East End – Shoreditch and Brick Lane. That is where I will be taking you today.

This part of London has a lot of layers of history. We saw some of this on our Spitalfields walk a while ago, or our walk along the path of the Walbrook. This street art connection has existed for a while; you can find other posts out there which direct you to particular places or pieces. But the thing is, this is an ever-changing canvas. My advice is to relax and enjoy – wander the streets, look for back alleys and hidden corners. You never know what you will find.

I have curated my images below into a few themes. These were just the thoughts that jumped out at me as I walked around. The connections and common themes are almost endless, however. As infinite as the artworks themselves.

Being… Human?

Beautiful faces. Strange creatures. Futuristic. Nostalgic. Funny. Creative. Here are some artists whose work we connect with on a human level, even when it’s disconcerting.

Community Spaces

With such a concentration of creative expression within a few blocks, not everyone can have a wall to themselves. And not everyone wants to work on a large scale. Here are some of the spaces where artists come together to work in a variety of street art styles and media.

Spell It Out

Got something to say? The next selection of images brings together the written word, from tags to political commentary.

Urban Landscapes

Let’s zoom out for a moment. How does this art fit into the landscape of Shoreditch and Brick Lane. (Post?) industrial, multi-ethnic, creative and dynamic – this energy is reflected in the artists’ creativity.

Work In Progress

The great outdoors. A versatile studio, and a fantastic place to watch the artist at work. Here we can see how quickly works come together in the ever-changing landscape of East London’s street art.
